Welcome to the Island Chimney Project

We are a group dedicated to the idea that the chimney project should move forward.... somehow.

This blog is a step in that direction.  Anyone can comment by scrolling to the bottom of this page clicking on "Comments."

Proposal:  a weekend in June 2015 with Patience and Bob (bring your boat?) offering a workshop for anyone who wants to be trained in stone masonry and chimney building.

Below are some pictures taken in late July 2014.

First and foremost:  the existing, working, safe chimney built by Bob.  An inspiration!

Question:  does the kitchen chimney need to be taller to draw better?

Next, pictures of the currently incomplete chimney.

Foundation of current chimney project.  Nice base to build on!

Notice that cinder block extends below ground level, with native rock above.

On top of the brick "inner" chimney is a metal damper for the flu.  See close-up below.

The damper is a little rusty, but it still works.  Q:  How to get the flu tiles (below) to stack on this metal-and-brick base?

Below are pictures of the flu tiles.  Here's an inventory:

All tiles are 24" long

There are seven 12" x 12" (large square) tiles
There are twelve 8" x 12" (rectangle) tiles
There is one 8" x 8" (small square) tile

For the top, there is one 12" long 8" x 12" (half long rectangle) and one round 12" x 8" tile.

Above and below:  flu tiles stacked in the field.

Below you'll see about 30 new bricks  that are located next to the uncompleted chimney..  All in good shape.

Below are pictures of the "outside" chimney -- built of local rocks.
